Once again it was a busy year for ClearAccess at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Each year we take the opportunity to meet with customers and partners, and show off our current products along with some new applications. I also enjoy touring the showroom floor to observe emerging trends as well as the more forward-looking concepts.
This year we were on display with Broadcom showing our home network management, Bandwidth Monitor™ app, and a special video application based on the Broadcom 7425 set-top-box chipset. We also showcased our management capabilities on the new Broadcom 3383 chipset, which is the next generation gateway chipset with Broadcom’s new Full-Band Capture technology.
We also unveiled our mobile app for the Control Panel consumer interface. We plan to launch it in the first half of this year across all of the major mobile platforms, and CES was the first time it was included in our demonstrations. This is a great way to give the end user instant updates on what’s going on in their home network and how to make it all work better.
We had a great response at CES and we appreciate those that stopped by to see our new products in action. If you didn’t make it to CES, drop us a line and we’ll setup a demo!

The mainstream media loves CES and the industry trends it reveals, but with Apple and Google not in attendance the show can only go so far. I enjoyed this article which points out how last year’s big newcomer, 3DTV, was dead on arrival, and a prediction that the same fate awaits most of the 80+ tablets on display this year because they are not iPads.
Last year at CES over-the-top (OTT) video really had a coming out party, but as Fortune magazine correctly points out, right now it’s kind of a mess. This whole movement was based on creating alternatives to the traditional service providers and high-priced bundles, instead we’ve seen confusion over content rights and legal debates over bandwidth carriage. As nice as having Hulu and Netflix everywhere sounds, the existing structure between studios, distributors, and advertisers makes this all a zero-sum game for the consumer. I think it will be years before people drop their cable or satellite provider in great numbers, and in the meantime the OTT services will remain complementary to traditional video service.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on all the news and announcements this week and how they might impact the broadband market in 2011!
Looking at the schedule of events, it appears multi-screen delivery of content and over-the-top strategy will be key topics. The latter crosses over into what I believe is the biggest challenge facing video providers, as consumers are increasingly demanding à la carte channel options as opposed to expensive bundles.
I’ll be watching to see how recent activity from players like Google, Apple, Netflix, and Hulu impact the conversation, and what strategies are presented for addressing this very real threat to Telco video. I’ll offer some thoughts in our Calix User Group speaking slot, and look forward to hearing what others have to say at the TelcoTV event. See you there!
